Dry, cracking hands in autumn and winter — which hand cream to choose

Podopharm · Hands

For dry, rough and cracking hands, choose a cream suited to your skin's needs and use it according to the instructions for the specific product. For very dry hand skin, the following is intended SKINFLEX® Hand cream-mask with adaptogens and colostrum, which according to the product card restores softness and elasticity to the skin. During the day you can also reach for SESPANTHENOL hand cream 50 ml with panthenol.

In short

  • For whom: according to the product card, the cream-mask is for very dry, rough and dehydrated hand skin, also prone to micro-cracks.
  • How often: as needed, daily, and for very dry skin several times a day.
  • At night: a thicker layer of the cream-mask, applied like a mask.
  • Note: bleeding cracks, rash or itching are reasons to consult a dermatologist.

Why do hands dry out and crack in autumn and winter?

We wash our hands many times a day, they come into contact with water, detergents and disinfectants, and in autumn cold air outside and dry air in heated rooms add to the problem. The skin then loses its softness, roughness appears, a feeling of tightness and small cracks, most often on the backs of the hands, knuckles and around the nails. The Podopharm cream-mask card describes it like this: frequent disinfection, frost, working in water and detergents can take away the skin's comfort in a short time.

That is why in winter hand cream is not an extra, but a permanent step after washing. About how home care differs from a hand treatment in a salon, we write in the text Manicure and hand spa — not the same thing.

SKINFLEX® Cream-mask — what is in the formula and how to use it?

SKINFLEX® Krem-maska do dłoni z adaptogenami i colostrum
SKINFLEX® Hand cream-mask with adaptogens and colostrum

SKINFLEX® Hand cream-mask with adaptogens and colostrum is a rich formula by the Polish brand Podopharm with a cream-mask texture. The product card describes it as a cosmetic for very dry, dehydrated and crack-prone skin that absorbs quickly and does not leave a sticky layer. The packaging contains 75 ml.

The formula contains plant emollients, hemp oil, colostrum fat, shea butter, orange peel wax, vitamin E and Lipex L’sens, which according to the product card is a vegan alternative to lanolin. According to the manufacturer, these ingredients restore softness and elasticity to the skin of the hands. They are complemented by adaptogens (life plant extract, goji berries, aloe juice) and the prebiotic biolin, which according to the product card supports the condition of the skin's protective barrier.

How to use: apply a small amount to the skin of the hands and massage in until fully absorbed, not forgetting the cuticles and the backs of the hands. Use as needed, daily, and for very dehydrated skin also several times a day. The product card also suggests applying a thicker layer at night, like a mask.

Day hand cream: SESPANTHENOL

SESPANTHENOL hand cream According to the card, Sesdermy is a cream for dry, rough and irritated hand skin exposed to frequent washing and unfavourable conditions. It combines panthenol, i.e. provitamin B5, with shea butter and vegetable oils, absorbs quickly, moisturises and soothes. The packaging is 50 ml, so it fits in a handbag.

The card gives a simple instruction: apply a small amount to cleansed hands and massage in, not forgetting the cuticles and the spaces between the fingers. Use after every hand wash and at night, and in winter and with frequent contact with water apply more often.

What bothers you What to pay attention to
Very dry, rough hands with small cracks SKINFLEX® cream-mask daily, and at night a thicker layer.
Hands dried out from frequent washing, need a cream for the handbag SESPANTHENOL after every hand wash.
Rough cuticles around the nails According to both cards, the cream is also massaged into the cuticles.
Hands damaged by disinfectants Cream-mask: the card lists this situation in the “For whom” section.

Step-by-step routine

In the morning and during the day

  1. Wash your hands and dry them.
  2. Choose one cream. Massage SESPANTHENOL also into the cuticles and the spaces between the fingers; massage SKINFLEX® cream-mask also into the cuticles and the backs of the hands.
  3. Use SESPANTHENOL after every hand wash, and more often in winter; apply SKINFLEX® cream-mask as needed.

Evening

  1. Wash and dry your hands.
  2. Apply a thicker layer of SKINFLEX® cream-mask, like an overnight mask.
  3. Massage the cream also into the backs of the hands and cuticles.

Application and frequency come from the instructions of the individual creams; washing and drying hands is a general hygiene tip. The cards do not describe layering them one on top of the other, so use one of them at a time.

Most common mistakes

  • Ignoring the current needs of the skin. The cards describe use after washing or as needed; adjust the frequency to the chosen cream and the condition of the skin.
  • Skipping the backs of the hands and cuticles. Both cards mention cuticles; the SKINFLEX® card also indicates the backs of the hands, and SESPANTHENOL the spaces between the fingers.
  • One amount of cream for every occasion. The cream-mask card suggests that in case of intensified dryness, a thicker layer can be applied at night like a mask.
  • Going out into the frost without gloves. Cold air and wind dry out the skin of the hands, and cream will not replace protection.
  • Cleaning and washing dishes with bare hands. When working with water and detergents, use protective gloves.

When to see a specialist?

A cosmetic does not replace a visit to a specialist: if the cracks bleed, do not disappear despite regular care, itch, a rash, blisters or redness appears that is spreading, consult a dermatologist. This also applies to changes that appear after contact with a specific cleaning agent or type of gloves.
