Air conditioning — the new winter of the 21st century
Sounds dramatic? The data speaks for itself. An air-conditioned room maintains humidity levels at 20-30%. In comparison: skin functions optimally at 40-60%. The Sahara Desert has an average humidity of about 25%.
Your office, air-conditioned car, and shopping mall — these are micro-deserts.
And here lies the problem, because when the air is dry, water evaporates from the skin faster than the skin can replenish it. This process is called TEWL — transepidermal water loss. Under normal conditions, we lose about 300-400 ml of water through the skin daily. In an air-conditioned office, this value can increase by 30-40%.
The effects are visible to the naked eye:
- The skin becomes dull, gray, and lacks radiance
- Fine lines of dehydration appear (not wrinkles — dehydration!)
- Makeup “flakes” and settles into fine lines
- The skin produces more sebum as a compensatory mechanism (yes — dry air conditioning can paradoxically increase oiliness)
Thermal shock — a daily reality that is not often talked about
Imagine your typical summer day:
- 7:00 — shower (warm, steam)
- 8:00 — leaving home (30°C+, humidity 60-70%)
- 8:30 — entering the subway/bus (AC, 22°C)
- 9:00 — office (AC, 21°C, humidity 25%)
- 13:00 — going out for lunch (33°C, sunny)
- 13:30 — returning to the office (AC, 21°C)
- 18:00 — leaving (still hot)
- 19:00 — home (AC or open windows)
Your skin undergoes 6-8 environmental changes daily. Each change is an adaptation — blood vessels expand and contract, sebaceous and sweat glands speed up and slow down, the lipid barrier is tested time and again.
Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe (author of “The Beauty of Dirty Skin”) called this phenomenon “thermal whiplash” — a thermal whip for the skin. And this is the foundation upon which the entire trend of climate-adaptive beauty was built.
Climate-adaptive skincare — what does it actually mean?
Climate-adaptive skincare is a term that exploded in the beauty industry in 2025-2026. The idea is simple: instead of using the same routine all day and all year, you adjust your skincare to the current environmental conditions.
It’s not a revolution — it’s an evolution. Korean skincare has been talking about “reading the skin” (skin listening) for years. Japanese skincare philosophy has always taken seasonality into account. Climate-adaptive beauty simply adds the dimension of microclimates — because in one day you pass through several climatic zones without leaving the city.
Three pillars of the adaptive approach:
1. Lipid barrier as a priority It’s not about “moisturizing more.” It’s about preventing the skin from losing the water it already has. Ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids create a “mortar” between the skin cells. When this mortar is compromised (by AC, wind, overheating), water escapes.
2. Adaptogenic ingredients Niacinamide, centella asiatica, beta-glucan, ectoin — ingredients that help the skin respond to environmental stress. It’s not about their trendiness, but about proven osmoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects.
3. Rhythm of application, not just ingredients In the morning, you apply something different than in the evening — you know that. But climate-adaptive beauty adds a third moment: midday, when you’ve been in AC for several hours.
Protocol for a summer office day — step by step
Morning (before leaving home)
Goal: UV protection + preparation for the heat
- Gentle cleansing — gel or foam, pH 5.5
- Niacinamide serum (5-10%) — strengthens the barrier, regulates sebum, has anti-inflammatory effects. A study published in British Journal of Dermatology showed that niacinamide reduces TEWL by 20% after 4 weeks of use.
- Light cream with ceramides — NOT heavy, but with ceramides. Look for a gel-cream or fluid formula. Ceramides 1, 3, and 6-II are the foundation of the lipid barrier.
- SPF 50 — a separate product, fluid or gel-cream, the last layer
Consistency is key. In summer, a heavy cream under SPF = greenhouse effect, sweat trapped under layers, clogged pores. Light textures allow the skin to breathe in the heat.
In the office (every 2-3 hours)
Goal: replenishing moisture lost in AC
Here comes the most important product for the summer office: moisturizing mist.
But beware — not every mist works. And here we come to one of the biggest skincare myths.
Thermal water spray — does it really work?
Short answer: yes, but only if you know how to use it.
Long answer: thermal water sprayed on the skin in a dry room evaporates within 2-3 minutes — and takes water from the skin with it. The net effect? The skin is MUCH drier than before spraying.
This phenomenon is called the transepidermal pulling effect — dry air “pulls” water from the skin's surface.
Solution: after spraying with thermal mist, apply a thin layer of moisturizer on top (light serum with hyaluronic acid or emulsion). This “locks” water in the skin. The mist alone without sealing = a waste of time and money.
Alternative: mists with humectants in the formula (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, panthenol) — these do not require additional “sealing” because they bind water themselves.
Evening (regeneration after a day of struggle)
Goal: rebuilding the barrier, deep hydration
- Double cleansing — oil/balm (SPF, smog, sebum) + gel
- Serum with ceramides or hyaluronic acid — absorption on damp skin (damp skin = better absorption of humectants)
- Regenerating cream — here you can afford a richer texture. Ceramides, squalane, panthenol. Evening is the time for rebuilding — you don’t have to be light.
- Optionally: occlusion — a thin layer of petroleum jelly or balm on the driest areas (lips, around the eyes, hands). Not on the entire face unless you have very dry skin.
Sweat is not hydration — let’s stop confusing them
One of the most common summer myths: “But I sweat, my skin is moist.” No, it’s not.
Sweat is water, electrolytes (mainly NaCl), urea, and lactates. When sweat evaporates from the skin's surface, it takes heat with it (that’s how thermoregulation works) — but also water from the stratum corneum. The more you sweat, the faster sweat evaporates, the more dehydrated the skin's surface becomes.
That’s why after intense sweating (workout, walking in the heat), the skin often feels:
- Tight
- Rough to the touch
- Irritated (salt in sweat can irritate micro-damages)
Sweat is a cooling system, not a moisturizing system. Your skin after a workout in the heat needs hydration — not another drying with a towel.
City vs. sea vs. mountains — different skincare for every trip
Summer city
- Smog + UV = oxidative stress → priority: antioxidants (vit. C, E, ferulic)
- AC in the office → priority: ceramides, mist
- Concrete reflects UV → SPF even in the shade
Sea
- High humidity → lighter hydration
- Salt + sand + wind → lipid barrier under fire → ceramides in the evening
- UV reflection from water = 25% more radiation → SPF every 2 hours, even under an umbrella
Mountains
- Every 1000 m above sea level = +10-12% UV radiation → SPF 50 is an absolute minimum
- Dry air at altitude → TEWL increases → intense hydration
- Wind → occlusion (petroleum jelly on lips, heavier cream than usual)
Greenhouse effect under a mask
Sheet masks — a Korean ritual that has taken the world by storm. But in summer, they have one serious drawback: the fabric blocks the skin's breathing, creating a greenhouse effect. Under the mask, temperature and humidity rise, which sounds good (more hydration!), but in practice:
- Expanded pores due to heat = greater penetration of ingredients (good effect)
- But also: greater penetration of bacteria if the skin was not perfectly cleansed
- Sweat trapped under the mask = irritation, heat rash
- Long use (30+ min) = maceration — the skin “softened” loses barrier integrity
Summer alternative: wash-off masks or hydrogel — they breathe, cool, and do not overheat. Or: sheet mask for a maximum of 10-15 minutes, in an air-conditioned room. Not on the beach.
Hydration from within — don’t forget about water
No cream can compensate for chronic dehydration of the body. In summer, you need 2-3 liters of water daily (more with physical activity and heat). Coffee and alcohol do not count — both are diuretic.
Simple dehydration tests:
- Pinch test: pinch the skin on the back of your hand. If it returns slower than immediately — you’re drinking too little.
- Urine color: light straw = OK. Dark yellow = drink more. Clear = you can slow down.
