A peel accelerates the natural exfoliation of the epidermis, making the skin smoother, better at reflecting light, and more receptive to subsequent skincare products. The catch is that it is very easy to overdo exfoliation — and a compromised skin barrier results in the exact opposite of the desired effect. In this category, we offer acid, enzymatic, and mechanical peels from professional brands.

Three types of peels

  • Acid (chemical) peels – loosen the connections between epidermal cells. AHAs (glycolic, mandelic, lactic) work on the surface and hydrate; BHA (salicylic) is oil-soluble and works inside the pore lining, making it ideal for blackheads; PHAs (lactobionic, maltobionic) are the gentlest and best tolerated by sensitive skin.
  • Enzymatic peels – plant enzymes (papain, bromelain) digest dead cells without disturbing the living epidermis. The safest option for vascular and reactive skin types.
  • Mechanical peels – abrasive particles or powders. Effective, but easily irritating to vascular and acne-prone skin.

How often and when

Two to three times a week is the upper limit for most skin types; once a week for sensitive skin. Apply peels in the evening because exfoliated skin is more susceptible to UV rays — which is why sunscreen the next day is not optional.

Do not combine a peel with retinol on the same night. Do not apply a peel to irritated skin, post-treatment, or when active inflammation is present.

Signs you are over-exfoliating

Skin that feels tight and shiny in a way that doesn't look like hydration. Stinging after applying products that previously caused no issues. Sudden redness and heightened reactivity. In such cases, discontinue all active ingredients for 1–2 weeks and return strictly to hydration and barrier repair.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do a peel in the summer? Home peels yes, with consistent SPF protection. Stronger professional treatments are typically scheduled outside of the intense sun season.

Which acid for blackheads? Salicylic acid — the only common one that is oil-soluble and penetrates deep inside the pores.

Does the skin have to peel? No. Visible peeling is not a measure of a peel's effectiveness.
