The end of summer. The tan fades, but the spots remain. Some appeared for the first time in summer, others are darker than last year — and none intend to disappear on their own. This is one of the most common reasons why clinics fill up in September and October with people wanting to "do something about their skin after vacation". The problem is that "something" is quite a broad term. Sun spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation look similar, but have different causes — and completely different methods work for each of them. The ideal method for one can exacerbate the other. Moreover, not every time after summer is equally good for brightening treatments. There are things worth doing right away, and those that require a bit of waiting. This text is a roadmap — from diagnosis, through timing, through method selection, to what you can do on your own at home. Step by step, without jumping straight to the price list.
Step 1 — Diagnosis: Sun Spots, Melasma, or PIH
The most important thing that most guides do not say directly: there is no single pigmentation. Under this term, there are at least three different problems — each with a different cause, depth, and logic of treatment. Before you start acting, it’s worth trying to preliminarily determine what you are dealing with. This does not require equipment or medical knowledge — just good light and a few questions.
Why is this important in practice? A laser targeting melanin, which works perfectly on sun spots, can exacerbate melasma — because heat is the last thing a hormonal spot needs. Therefore, the first visit to the clinic is always diagnosis, not treatment. The specialist examines the pigmentation, asks about history, sometimes assesses the skin under special lighting — and only then decides what makes sense and what could be harmful.
💡 Fun fact: sun spots and melasma can exist on the same face simultaneously — and each requires a different approach. This is one of the reasons why a "pigmentation protocol" without diagnosis is a bit like taking medication without knowing what ails you.
Step 2 — Timing: When to Start Treatment (Not Right After Vacation)
You’ve returned from vacation, you see spots, and you want to act immediately. This is understandable — but haste can be a mistake here. Skin after intense sun exposure is overreactive for a while: the epidermis may be slightly damaged, blood vessels dilated, and melanin levels elevated. A chemical peel or laser on such skin is a risk, not help — it increases the chance of irritation, and in the worst-case scenario, it can trigger new post-inflammatory pigmentation or exacerbate existing ones.
Treating pigmentation is a marathon, not a sprint. The best results are achieved by those who start calmly, when the skin is truly ready, and not in the August heat after returning from the beach. Fall and winter are traditionally the best seasons for chemical peels and laser treatments — shorter days, fewer opportunities for tanning, easier to maintain a protection regimen. A few weeks of patience at the start can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
💡 Fun fact: the pigmentation you see after returning from vacation did not "develop" on the beach in the last week. Melanin needs a few days to a few weeks to migrate to the surface of the epidermis and become visible. Some spots visible in September are the result of exposure from early summer.
Step 3 — Brightening Peels: The Logic of Acids
When the skin is ready, chemical peels are the first line of action — effective, safe, and available for most skin types. The mechanism is twofold: acids accelerate epidermal turnover, exfoliating pigmented cells, while some active ingredients inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase — limiting melanin production at the source. The effects are gradual and build up from session to session.
In clinic work with post-summer pigmentation, several acids appear most frequently:
Azelain Acid inhibits tyrosinase — the key enzyme in melanin production — and also has anti-inflammatory effects. It is one of the more targeted brightening ingredients that works well for many people with sun spots and post-acne marks. It is often the first choice for sensitive and reactive skin.
Ferulic Acid is primarily a strong antioxidant that stabilizes and enhances the action of vitamin C and retinol. It does not exfoliate spectacularly on its own, but in combination with vitamin C, it significantly improves skin protection against further oxidative damage and helps even out skin tone. Valuable as part of post-summer treatment.
Almond Acid has large molecules that penetrate the skin slowly and gently. This makes it often the first choice for sensitive skin and darker skin types — where stronger acids could cause irritation and new post-inflammatory pigmentation. It works gently, but when used regularly, it provides a noticeable improvement in skin tone.
Vitamin C brightens existing spots, protects against the formation of new ones, and strengthens the skin barrier. Often combined with ferulic acid as an antioxidant duo.
There is a lot of advice online like "combine niacinamide with vitamin C, add retinol and glycolic acid". It sounds like comprehensive care — in reality, it can be a mixture that irritates the skin barrier and causes inflammation. And inflammation with pigmentation is the shortest route to PIH — new post-inflammatory spots that you are trying to avoid. Irritated skin reacts more quickly with melanin and rebuilds skin tone more slowly. If you have doubts about your home kit — show it to a specialist during a consultation before starting a series of clinic treatments.
Step 4 — When IPL is Better Than Peels
Chemical peels are an excellent foundation — but there are several situations where intense pulsed light (IPL) is the first choice method or a valuable complement. Not because it is "stronger" in the sense of being more aggressive, but because it targets a different mechanism and achieves effects that acids alone cannot match.
How does IPL work in practice? Intense pulsed light is selectively absorbed by melanin — clusters of pigment in the spot absorb energy, which turns into heat and breaks down accumulated pigment. After the treatment, the pigmentation usually temporarily darkens and peels for a few days — this is a normal, desired reaction, a sign of action. Then, brighter skin underneath is revealed. Many people see a noticeable improvement after just one or two sessions with classic sun spots.
Important caveat: IPL is more sensitive to tanning than peels. A treatment performed on skin with active tanning carries the risk of burns or new pigmentation. This is another argument for the fall-winter season — and for a consultation where the skin type and current skin condition are assessed.
💡 Fun fact: sun spots and melasma can look almost identical to the naked eye, but react very differently to IPL. With lentigo, there is spectacular, rapid improvement. With hormonal melasma — exacerbation of the problem. This is why diagnosis precedes treatment, not the other way around.
Step 5 — What to Do at Home (and Why SPF is Half the Success)
Clinic treatments provide a boost — but the durability of their effects largely depends on what happens between sessions and after the treatment course is completed. The two pillars of home care for pigmentation are sun protection and active ingredients. The order is intentional.
SPF 50+ — every day, without exceptions. This is not an optional element. Melanocytes react to every UV stimulus with melanin production — regardless of whether you just finished a series of peels. UVA radiation penetrates through clouds, through office windows, through car windows. Without daily sunscreen, treatment effects can reverse within weeks. This is not a recommendation — it is a condition for the rest to make sense.
Vitamin C in the morning. A serum with a stable form of vitamin C applied in the morning, under the filter, stabilizes skin tone, supports antioxidant action, and lightly brightens. It will not replace clinic peels, but for many people, when used regularly, it improves radiance and evens out surface irregularities.
Niacinamide or retinol in the evening — if your skin can handle it. Niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanosomes to keratinocytes and can be a safer first step for reactive skin. Retinol accelerates cell renewal but requires gradual introduction and absolutely does not go together with strong acids used simultaneously. It’s worth discussing specific selections with a cosmetologist — preferably at the same consultation where you discuss the clinic series.
The most common mistake we see in people coming back from vacation with hopes for quick results is trying to "catch up" on summer in a few weeks: a series of treatments, plus aggressive home care consisting of several recommended products at once — all at once and immediately. The result can be irritated, unbalanced skin that loses its protective barrier and produces more melanin as a defensive reaction. After a few weeks, pigmentation returns worse than before "treatment". Effective work with pigmentation is a process: it starts with diagnosis, goes step by step, and never skips daily SPF.
