A soft toothbrush (old one) + a bit of sugar and oil → gentle mechanical peeling. Removes dead keratin → balm absorbs more effectively.
Why do lips get chapped?
- Factor: Breathing through the mouth — Effect: Excessive moisture evaporation
- Factor: Habit of licking lips — Effect: Saliva contains digestive enzymes → irritates the skin of the lips
- Factor: Dry air — Effect: Autumn/winter/air conditioning → dehydration
- Factor: Vitamin deficiencies — Effect: Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) → cracking at the corners of the lips
- Factor: Dehydration — Effect: Too little water → all mucous membranes dry
- Factor: Medications — Effect: Retinoids, isotretinoin, some antibiotics
- Factor: UV without SPF — Effect: Unprotected lip skin ages and dries quickly
Home lip care — what really works?
Lip peeling 1–2 times a week
A soft toothbrush (old one) + a bit of sugar and oil → gentle mechanical peeling. Removes dead keratin → balm absorbs more effectively.
❌ Don’t overdo it — peeling lips too often = irritation.
Lip balm — ingredients matter
Good balm: ✅ Lanolin — occlusion, long-lasting hydration ✅ Squalane — lightweight, non-comedogenic ✅ Shea/cocoa butter — occlusion ✅ Vitamin E — antioxidant ✅ SPF 15–30 — for daytime (essential!)
Balm that DOES NOT work: ❌ Waxes only (carnauba) without humectants → occlusion without hydration → lips dry after application ❌ Peppermint/cinnamon oils as main ingredients → irritation
Habit of licking lips — how to stop it?
Licking lips provides temporary relief, but enzymes in saliva (amylase) irritate the skin of the lips. Use balm often enough to avoid the need to lick.
