Retinol speeds up cell turnover — this action, with regular use over several months, can be really noticeable. Peptides support hydration and skin condition. These are real mechanisms, not just marketing.
The problem with most "brightening" products is that they are designed with a focus on visual effect, not biological. Mica particles, pearl pigments, light diffusers — this is makeup technology in a skincare product. It looks great in photos, but the next morning the skin will return to its state because nothing has changed in it.
A highlighter and brightening base have their place in skincare — but as a makeup tool, not for skin repair. It’s worth distinguishing them. If you reach for them every day to "look somewhat decent" — that’s a signal that it’s worth checking what lies at the root of the grayness.
Why peeling is not a trend — just mechanics
The word "peeling" is often misused today — attached to products that are essentially gentle scrubs or toning waters with a bit of acids. Meanwhile, a true peeling is mechanical or chemical removal of the layer of dead cells from the skin's surface — and this is an action with a specific, biological meaning.
When the old layer of the epidermis is removed, several things happen at once. First, the skin immediately reflects light better — because what we see are living, hydrated cells, not that gray, opaque shell on top. - Sun without filter — UV radiation directly drives melanin production and accelerates skin aging. After peeling, when the skin is rebuilt and "fresh," a lack of filter over days or weeks can reverse the effect before it can solidify. SPF filter is not an option after the treatment — it’s an integral part of it.
- Chronic dehydration — not drinking enough water is not an aesthetic issue; dehydration shows on the skin faster than on the rest of the body. Skin without adequate hydration from within is dull, sagging, and reacts poorly to treatments.
- Irrregular sleep — during sleep, the skin regenerates intensively: produces collagen, repairs cell DNA, restores the barrier. Chronic sleep deprivation leads to a chronic deficit in repair — and it shows on the face much more than on the body.
- Nicotine — the only factor that affects two mechanisms at once: constricts vessels (worsens microcirculation) and directly blocks collagen synthesis. The skin of a smoker reacts poorly to treatments and quickly returns to a gray state.
