A mask is a targeted treatment — an intensive dose of ingredients for a few minutes, not a part of your daily routine. Its role is to react quickly to the skin's condition: hydration after intense sun exposure, soothing after irritation, or cleansing when there is excess sebum. In this category, we have cream, sheet, hydrogel, and clay masks.
Types of masks and their uses
- Hydrating cream and hydrogel — hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol. For regular use, even on oily skin.
- Sheet masks — soaked paper or biocellulose keeps ingredients in contact with the skin under occlusion. Quick hydration effect, convenient before going out.
- Clay and cleansing — clay, charcoal, sulfur. For oily skin and blackheads, but not for the whole face if you have combination skin — it is better to apply it locally, on the T-zone.
- Soothing — centella asiatica, aloe, allantoin. After treatments, after sun exposure, or during irritation flare-ups.
- Exfoliating and enzymatic — combine the action of a mask and a peel. Treat them like a peel: maximum twice a week.
- Sleeping masks — left on until morning instead of cream, as an intensive occlusive layer.
How to use masks sensibly
The application time on the packaging is not a suggestion — an overstayed clay mask dries out the skin, and a sheet mask starts to draw moisture back from the skin once it dries. Remove the sheet mask before it dries completely.
Do not use several types of masks in one session or an exfoliating mask on the day you use retinol. Apply cream after the mask — masks rarely contain occlusive ingredients that will lock in the provided hydration.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I use a mask? A hydrating one up to 2–3 times a week, a cleansing or exfoliating one once.
Can a mask replace a cream? No, except for sleeping masks, which are designed for that purpose.
Can I use a mask before an important event? A hydrating or soothing one — yes, preferably the day before. It is better not to test a cleansing or exfoliating one right before.
