Toners are no longer just products for "removing soap residue"—today, they serve as the first layer of hydration and a way to prep the skin for subsequent skincare products. Modern formulas are alcohol-free, packed instead with humectants, soothing ingredients, and often low concentrations of acids. In this category, you will find toners, essences, and mists.
Types of Toners
- Hydrating — hyaluronic acid, glycerin, panthenol. Applied to damp skin, they enhance the effectiveness of serums and creams.
- Soothing — centella asiatica, allantoin, plant extracts. Ideal for sensitive and vascular skin.
- Exfoliating — featuring AHA, BHA, or PHA acids in low concentrations. The gentlest way to introduce acids into your routine.
- Balancing — for oily skin, often with niacinamide or zinc; they help refine the appearance of pores.
- Mists — for a midday refresh, even over makeup.
How and When to Use
Apply toner immediately after cleansing, onto damp skin—either patting it in with your hands or using a cotton pad. The hands-on method is more product-efficient and less irritating. For exfoliating toners, a cotton pad is often better as it allows for better quantity control.
Use acid toners in the evening and never at the same time as retinol. Hydrating and soothing toners can be used morning and night, even layered multiple times—a technique known from Korean skincare.
FAQ
Is toner necessary? It is not strictly essential, but it noticeably improves the performance of subsequent layers. For dehydrated skin, the difference can be dramatic.
Does alcohol in toner cause damage? Denatured alcohol high up on the ingredient list can dry out and irritate the skin—it is best avoided by those with sensitive skin.
What is the difference between a toner and an essence? Mainly consistency and concentration—an essence is usually thicker and more concentrated. In practice, the difference is sometimes purely semantic.
