A hair oil serves two different functions depending on when you use it: applied before washing, it protects the hair from excessive lipid depletion; applied after washing, it locks in moisture and smooths the surface. In this category, you will find professional hair oils, serums, and elixirs.
When to use a hair oil
- Before washing (hair oiling) — for an hour or overnight, on dry hair. It protects the hair structure during washing, especially for dry and porous hair.
- On damp hair before blow-drying — the most common method; reduces frizz and facilitates styling.
- On dry hair as a finishing touch — a few drops distributed in the palms, applied only to the ends. Adds shine.
How to choose an oil for your hair porosity
Porosity describes how raised the hair cuticles are and determines which oil will work best for you:
- Low porosity (smooth hair, difficult to absorb moisture) — oils with small molecules and a high content of saturated fatty acids: coconut, babassu. Heavy oils will just sit on the surface.
- Medium porosity — monounsaturated oils: argan, almond, macadamia. The most versatile group.
- High porosity (dry, frizzy, colored hair) — polyunsaturated oils and butters: grapeseed, flaxseed, shea.
If you don't know your porosity, start with argan oil — it is the most versatile and forms the basis of most professional products.
FAQ
How much oil should I apply? For shoulder-length hair, 2–3 drops; for longer hair, 4–6. Too much will weigh the hair down and give a greasy look.
Can hair oil be applied to the scalp? For dry skin, yes, as a pre-wash treatment. For oily skin — no.
Does oil protect against heat? Some products explicitly offer this feature. A classic plant oil on its own does not replace heat protection.
