Face cream is the product that seals your skincare routine — its job is to lock in what the previous layers delivered and rebuild the skin's protective barrier. Day cream vs. night cream — what is the difference

This is not just a marketing gimmick. Day creams have a lighter texture, often contain antioxidants and UV filters, and are formulated to sit well under makeup. Night creams tend to be richer, containing repairing and restructuring ingredients — retinol, peptides, acids — that are not used in the morning because they are light-sensitive or make the skin more sensitive to the sun.

If you only buy one cream, choose a night cream and pair it with a separate sunscreen in the morning. This is more effective than using a single multi-purpose cream twice a day.

How to choose the right texture for your skin type

  • Oily and combination skin — gels, gel-creams, and lightweight emulsions. A rich cream on this type of skin can increase sebum production and clog pores.
  • Dry skin — creams with ceramides, squalane, and plant butters. Dry skin suffers from a chronic lipid deficiency, so it needs an occlusive layer.
  • Dehydrated skin — this is a skin condition, not a type: it can also affect oily skin. Look for hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and panthenol, and treat the cream as a moisture-locking seal.
  • Sensitive and vascular skin — short ingredient lists free of alcohol and artificial fragrances, featuring niacinamide, panthenol, or centella asiatica.
  • Mature skin — retinoids and peptides in the evening, antioxidants and sunscreen in the morning.

How much cream to apply and in what order

A pea-sized amount for the entire face is plenty — excess product doesn't absorb better, it just sits on the surface. Cream is applied as the final step of your skincare routine, after serum, onto slightly damp skin: this helps lock in moisture more effectively.

In the morning, the order is: cleansing, toner, serum, cream, sunscreen. In the evening: makeup removal, cleansing, toner, serum or active treatment, cream. If you are using retinol and experience irritation, try the sandwich method — a thin layer of cream, retinol, cream.

Frequently asked questions

Does oily skin need a cream? Yes. Skipping moisturisation usually increases sebum production — the skin tries to "compensate" for the lack of water with oil.

Is an SPF moisturiser enough instead of a dedicated sunscreen? If it has SPF 30–50 and you apply it in the correct amount — yes. The problem is that people usually use too little skincare cream to achieve the declared protection.

How often should you change your cream? Skin does not "get used" to a product — there is no need to rotate them. Changing makes sense seasonally (richer in winter, lighter in summer) or when your skin condition changes.
