The base is DHA — a sugar that reacts with amino acids in dead epidermal cells to produce a brown pigment. How self-tanner works

DHA reacts with amino acids in the stratum corneum, creating melanoidins — brown-colored pigments. The effect develops gradually over several hours and lasts as long as the pigmented cells remain on the skin's surface — typically five to seven days, until natural exfoliation occurs.
